Five Songs (1)
Wednesdays are now for Five Songs.
Erykah Badu - Love of My Life: Ode to Hip Hop
From time to time, someone will tell met that they just don't get hip hop. Or even better, that rap music is all about pussy, booty and bling. At which point I sit them down and force them to watch the above video, which as it happens, is one of my all time favourites. Love of My Life is about hip hop. It's about where it came from, where it's been through the years, and what it means to people who love it. And it's great.
Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions
I think I first heard this song as part of a movie score. It shows up a lot on movie soundtracks. It's one of those artifacts of the 60s that's just there, in the background; in the shadows of the collective, pop cultural subconscious. At some point it ended up on my iPod and I discovered that I really, truly dig this track.
Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
Ahhhh! This song. This video. Remember when Lauryn Hill was a big deal? Videos like this were part of her big deal-ness. Effortlessly blending pop sensibility with social commentary. Beyonce - please to be reviewing Lauryn's body of work, thx. Respect is just a minimum.
Al Green - Let's Stay Together
I find it hard to believe that there are people who don't love Al Green. Seriously. How can you listen to the Reverend Mister Al Green and not fall a little bit in love? This song - it has a special place in my heart for being an ode to the joys of established and familiar love. It's a also wonderfully constructed bit of classic R&B.
Beastie Boys - The Negotiation Limerick File
Negotiation is from Hello Nasty, which remains my favourite Beastie Boys album, lo these many years later. And it is an album. I can happily listen to it from start to finish without skipping a single track. This one wasn't released as a single in the US (iirc), so those of you who don't own the album might never have heard it. What's special about it? The limericks. Yes, really. Limericks.
"Bet you're wondering what's been goin' on
Bet you think I almost lost my mind"
My DJ's got the cuts and the beats are on
We're comin' with the limericks and we're comin' strong
And the rhythm's on time to every word and rhyme
When it comes to keep it real I keep it really wrong
At the risk of sounding crass I would like to mention
That I'm well aware of your wack intentions
To usurp my prose you so and so
It's my primary bone of contention
I tell you everybody I've had it
Ah with all these people with static
I'll go insane if it don't rain
Sucker MC's are problematic
I love it when you hit those switches
A curve ball's what my pitch is
So here we here we come
Like dum ditty dum
I keep all five boroughs in stitches
"You're right man"
Sound sound sound sound sound sound
Sound sounds sweeter through the echolex
And It'll spin you around and throw you in a hex
Until you feel no pain inside your brain
All your worries are soothed by the sound effects
You read it in the Post and the Daily News
Listen everybody let's show improve
Don't let me begin about heroin
Living six feet deep just ain't the move
We're giving you soul power
I like it sweet and sour
When it comes to rhymes and beat designs
I'm at the control tower
Tell me what makes you so afraid
Of all those people you say you hate
Just give it one time for your mind
And let's try to negotiate
C'mon Ah let's try to negotiate
C'mon uh Ah let's try to negotiate
"Bet you're wondering what's been goin' on
Bet you think I almost lost my mind"
"Bet you think I almost lost my mind"
Bonus: Livepainting to Run Fay Run, by Issac Hayes.
