Still somewhat feverish. I decided to take a sick day. From work, but not from school. My Henry V essay is about halfway towards being done. I'm currently exploring the Scottish national character. Took me waaaay too long to do my morning skim of [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily, though. Woozy like whoa.

In fannish news: Those of you who read or write gen fic, [livejournal.com profile] fox1013 is hosting a Gen Battle. Go submit some prompts, people!

In meme news: I created an avatar on meez.com

Meez 3D avatar avatars games

Yeah, the things you do when you need a break from work.

Exploring the Scottish national character? In what way?

I'm doing an essay on the language of nationalism in Shakespeare's Henry V, and arguing that one of the main ways that he characterizes Englishness is negatively. So what Scotland is, England is not. What France is, England is not. He describes the Scots variously as weasels, dogs, forces of nature and 'like the tide'. I'm going to argue that the Scots are hypermasculine, un-Christian, but potentially Heroic (in the classical sense), which means they have potential, so long as the English can conquer them, and lead them into the light. According to the English in the play, that is.
