Actor Tim Roth was initially offered the role before Alan Rickman was cast, but Roth could not combine it with his work in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001), and eventually decided to not act as Snape. Only then did Rickman receive a formal offer.

Thank all the universe for that too because I really don't think Roth would have made as good of a Snape as Rickman.

See, I was always a Snape fan (and a Sirius & Remus fan -- I stopped reading after book 6 because Sirius was gone and the general storyline I could tell wasn't going where I wanted it to), and I think Snape=Trent Raznor is inexplicable. So it must be some Snape-apologist thing from after I left the club. Maybe it was after the page in the handbook explaining how he was actually really attractive and let his hair look that way on purpose for some disguise-like reason? (because it's very important to disguise your attractiveness while teaching fourteen-year-olds, for... some reason)
