With the American Idol RPS thing a few months ago, I think we're getting to a place where calling out problematic tropes in fanfic is more accepted. There's still push back, but less, so far as I can tell. Or maybe that particular example didn't make wide enough ripples for us to properly gauge things. Regardless, we need to be able to talk about our hobby, not just do it. We need to be able to make moral, ethical, and aesthetic value judgments, because that is what engaged people do. And because we need to have a mechanism for dealing with hateful people and ideas, and problematic works. I don't see how we're going to move forward, otherwise.
