Dexter this year
I didn't make it through the first episode, and skipped to the second. From there it was an absolute grind until the Dexter&Lumen relationship developed, no lie.
Some things: (spoilers, of course)
1. Deb
I'm of the opinion that of course Deb needs more screen time, Deb needs ALL THE SCREEN TIME, but this relationship with Quin is such a step backwards for her. Not that she knows that--yet. On the other hand, the disintegration of her quasi-friendship with LaGuerta has been nothing but good for her. We're getting stubborn, fast on her feet, clever, clever Deb at her best.
2. Lumen
I was a bit leery at first but I've really warmed up to her. I <3 Julia Stiles absolutely, and have really been enjoying her performance on the show. I'm also really enjoying Lumen's development from victim, to killer, to ally. She's kind of fulfilling a fantasy that Dexter had for his relationship with Rita or even Deb, but she's also growing into a strong and interesting character in her own right.
3. LaGuerta
idk idk she's always had a nasty streak, and while I'll be Team Deb forever, I've been a little uncomfortable the steady Deb > LaGuerta direction of the show. I was really grateful for the reminder in this latest ep that she's been covering for her people, as well as covering for herself. As usual it's hard to get a read on her.
4. Astor
I wasn't impressed with the actress' work earlier in the season, but found it less grating in this latest ep. Astor is... growing up fast, I guess, in the usual tv way of things. Not much else to say about her, except that I'm glad her relationship with Dexter has improved recently.
5. Dexter
Dexter is Dexter is Dexter, amirite? He's been looking for someone to accept him unconditionally since season one--maybe that person is Lumen, maybe it's Harrison, maybe he'll never get that. I'm not particularly invested in Dexter having that person though, because he's, you know, a serial killer. He does seem to be on steadier ground with Lumen than he was with Arthur or Miguel.
6. Quin
Nobody cares, plz die thx.
7. The story arc
Ok, seriously. What a slow start this year, my god. Even now, I'm more interested in the Dexter&Lumen relationship than I am the killers. Come on show, get it together.
