The future of Scans Daily (yes there is one)

First off, it's been wonderful to see you all come together. You guys did a great job of linking up my info post. Keep linking. There are already enough rumors, we don't want to encourage their spread. The other reason I want you guys to keep linking, is that I want to give as much of the membership as possible, a chance to connect with each other. We've all made friends at the comm, but not all of us had the forethought to exchange contact info.

Thanks to all of the membership, for being awesome. Special thanks to everyone who took positive steps towards maintaining our community.

[livejournal.com profile] refraction has offered lots of helpful advice on how to approach the Abuse Team.

[livejournal.com profile] raattgift has commented with clarifications on US intellectual property law.

[livejournal.com profile] pandanoai created a backup of the comm, early in February, and [livejournal.com profile] acroamatica has it mirrored here.

[livejournal.com profile] yatsuha made a syndicated feed for our Insane Journal backup, so we can watch it on LJ.

We've also received comments of support from Gail Simone and Warren Ellis. It means a lot, thank you both. ETA: and now Kurt Busiek as well!

Going Forward

Scans Daily at Insane Journal is picking up. The mod team will be updating the comm momentarily with the rules rewrite were working on before all this happened. Don't worry guys, nothing scary. *g* Unfortunately, IJ has a 1000 member limit on its comms, so this likely won't be our permanent home, but please do join and keep the spirit of SD alive. [livejournal.com profile] noscans_daily is up and running. We hope it will be everything [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily was, albeit without the scans. We'll try to have all the bugs worked out of both comms as soon as possible. Please bear with us in the meantime.

I haven't yet had a chance to go through all the comments on the info post, so if you have an urgent question that hasn't been answered, you can message me, [livejournal.com profile] rabican, or [livejournal.com profile] stubbleupdate. A lot of people, (really, a lot of people), have been asking if there's anything they can do to help. I've thought about it, and there are a couple of things.

1) Information. If you're an expert on intellectual property and copyright, share some of that knowledge. If you've been TOSed for copyright violations, share that experience with us.

2) Post. Seriously guys, post. At Scans Daily 2.0 and [livejournal.com profile] noscans_daily. Because we are not beaten.

3) Make love fanworks, not war. One of things we were working on, before the blowout, was sprucing up the comm. There's no reason we can't go forward with that. We are need of a profile banner and a new layout. Think about it - a contest will be announced shortly. If you like your graphics 100x100, shareable icons are welcome too. In fact, gankable commemorative icons for us all to share? Pure win.

4) Make love (to Scans Daily), not war. It's been great to hear your stories. How you discovered [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily, and what it meant to you. Keep writing them.

Again, thanks, all of you. We'll keep you guys updated as to what we're working on.

I'll echo most of what's been said here.

I won't be part of the Insanejournal stuff, but I'll be in charge of Noscans_daily (http://community.livejournal.com/noscans_daily), which is currently fuck ugly. So, if anybody has any ideas on layout etc, let me know.

The best thing that the community can do is group together on Noscans_daily (http://community.livejournal.com/noscans_daily), and actually show that we're the clever, rational and fun community that people have been saying that we are and not the pirates' cove that other people have been saying that we are.

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Kurt Busiek has also made comments of support - here (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2009/02/livejournal-shuts-down-scans-daily-community/).

Once we've gotten things into a holding pattern, we should look into Dreamwidth, I think. I don't suppose any s_d member has an in with the internal beta, or knows one of the people who makes Dreamwidth run? It would be great to talk to them and find out whether a new, improved s_d could find a home there.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm all about Dreamwidth too. :) I think I'll message [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic directly about it.

HEY!

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, I've just realized, we have tags again! XD

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2009-02-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*thumbs up!*

Re: HEY!

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ooo! We can make them sensible this time.

[identity profile] foxhack.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Dreamwidth? Whuzzat? I'd check for myself, but my internet connection is incredibly slow and I'm literally waiting several minutes for a single page to load...

Re: HEY!

[identity profile] foxhack.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to add them to my post but they didn't work!

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Dreamwidth (http://www.dreamwidth.org/). A new and improved journaling service that's in beta right now. It's run by experienced professionals, some of them former lj employees, most of whom are big geeks, or active members of fandom.

I'm going to get in contact with one of the project leaders, to see how they feel about IPR, but I think they might be a solution for us. They're big supporters of fan made content, such as vidding, which is another grey area.

Seconded on Dreamwidth, but the other option here is a multi-user, privately-hosted blog. OpenID enable it so that people can use their LJ identities, the push the RSS feed into LJ. If the feed gets ToS'd... meh.

[identity profile] foxhack.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Good idea, but I don't think people would be able to make their own posts that way.

Or can they?

If such an option is possible then I'm all for it and would help with design and such.

[identity profile] loqia.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have suggested it if they couldn't. ;)

Multi-author support ships out-of-the box with WordPress; most people just don't use it. /shrugs

[identity profile] foxhack.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I use Wordpress at my website (http://www.foxhack.net/), but as far as I knew you couldn't create a blog like that and have just about anyone become an author.

If I'm wrong, well, that's a plus. :)

[identity profile] jarodrussell.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Could I suggest FriendFeed or Tumblr? FriendFeed specifically would allow not only comments, but we could pull in feeds from a variety of sources. That would make sure even if the FF account got zapped, the posts would still exist; if one blog of posts got zapped, we could still post on FriendFeed.

Moving isn't the only next step, redundancy and bullet-proofing are important too.

Re: HEY!

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, it was set to maintainer-only creation - I changed it to members-only, to help minimize tag-insults, which happened sometimes on lj. It should work now!

[identity profile] loqia.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr I'd be leery about because you're starting to get into the same ToS issues as with LJ. And both Tumblr/FF have the problem of possessing less of a capacity to post large slabs of content; they're primarily designed to link it.

So what you're proposing is a decentralised system that relies on people having their own spaces to post content, then for a third party to pick it up and include it in the linkfeed. It's not bad per se, but it's not the model scans_daily has traditionally worked off.

It also requires people to sign up for a third-party service, which many will be leery to do (a multi-user blog, at least, can be OpenID-enabled).

[identity profile] loqia.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's under Settings > General > New User Default Role.

The problem is how to prevent spam sign-ups. The main thing I can think of is either, a) only allow OpenID sign-ups, b) implement some kind of CAPTCHA or similar anti-bot thing on registration, or c) set the default level to "Contributor" and promote people to Author once they've made their first approved, mod-screened post.

Or some combination of the above.

[identity profile] sketchglitch.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You can have multiple authors on a Wordpress. Enable signups and then set default to author I think? Or maybe the mods have to give author privilege... which might be a bit too much work. XD I can check it up on my installation if anyone likes!

[identity profile] mullon.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
So is this the place to go now for scans_daily related news?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's a good place since I'm on the mod team for both the new comms, but I'll x-post everything to [livejournal.com profile] noscans_daily and Scans Daily 2.0 (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/).

[identity profile] mullon.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well, like I said somewhere else, I'm glad to see you guys not taking this lying down. Though now it is a bit weird juggling through three websites. Not impossible, just different.

[identity profile] syringavulgaris.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Holy crap, I go away for 24 hours and look what happens...

Thanks to all of you who were on monitor duty and enacted emergency evacuations to alternate Earths!

Re: HEY!

[identity profile] scottyquick.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Quick! You need to mention how you shouldn't put tags like "Iron Man" or "Batman", instead put tags like "Bruce Wayne" or "Tony Stark"

WE CAN SAVE SO MANY TAGS THAT WAY.

[identity profile] kasumi-sora.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank for working so hard on this and moving so quickly. This must have eaten your day.

I don't know if this is practical or not, but when you approach the Abuse Team, perhaps you could stress how people bought more comics because of s_d, not less. I know I did! The fears that posting scans is cutting sales is absurd. And the Big Two is getting free advertising through the comm. Companies would kill for that!

*keeps fingers crossed*
