Winter Solider - origin of the name?

Has Ed Brubaker said what the inspiration was for Bucky's renaming as the Winter Soldier? There are two possibilities that I see:

THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

Thomas Paine, Crisis 1.

Or the Winter Soldier Investigation into American war crimes in Vietnam, which got its name from a paraphrase of Paine. Btw, the documentary of the investigation is available here.

Has Bru talked about this? Is it explained in the books (which I haven't read straight through)?

He emailed you back?

Wow, I used to send pretty much monthly emails to him about Captain America and Daredevil, but I never got a response back. (The Captain America ones were always about a week late, though, because it would take me a week's worth of re-reading and editing after every subsequent issue came out for me to turn it into something relatively reasonable enough to be worth sending instead of just an angry flame)

I don't know, maybe he liked the question? ;) It was a quick response too.

Well, Bucky's his favorite character -- he probably likes talking about him much more than he likes answering questions like "why have all the women in Daredevil either gone insane or been shot?" Everyone likes to talk about their favorite characters.

*g* I'm going to read his run from the first issue to current, when I'm done this term. I'm sure my review will be full of those kinds of questions.

The Daredevil run, or the CA run? For DD, you actually need to start with the beginning of Bendis's run on the title -- Brubaker continued the plotline Bendis started for a significant section of his run (he actually did an awesome job wrapping it up, even if it is kind of obvious that he stole some things from Watchmen at one point).

The Cap run, since I've already got large parts of it. I've started reading DD mid-run. I'm not sure if I'm going to try to catch up. There's so much recommended reading when it comes to DD.
