Possibly triggering for survivors
Last night, half a block from my home, a girl was assaulted by three men. She's now in hospital. Suspects? Well, they were wearing hoodies.
This, just after the sentencing of a man who raped two women on campus in one night. He was the big name rapist of three years ago. But not big enough that the details of the case haven't started to blur with those of other cases from the same year and others.
It's become the story of the neighborhood: another year, another gang rape; another year, another serial rapist. When the hell is this going to stop?
I am loving the platitudes that have come from university admin, and our MPP and council member. The university is working to improve security. They've spent $3 million on improving security. They've run seminars. They're trying. Where's the fucking OUTRAGE?
Is it not socially acceptable to be livid that there are men deliberately targeting the young women of this neighborhood? That they're coming from near and far (yes, literally!), to prey on these young women? Students, many of them, and away from home for the first time. If not students then lower middle class, working class, or poor women. Women who regularly walk home from the bus stop late at night, because they've got late classes and late shifts. In short, women who have precious little choice in the matter. Women who are vulnerable because of it.
"When we get the park developed, there will be more lights and it will be safer." Oh really? Nice plug for one of your pet projects there, Mr. Politician. You're working hard for your constituents. $3 million dollars on cameras and god knows what else. Certainly not increased security patrols. As someone who walks the campus at night, and walks the rest of the neighborhood at night, I can assure you that no, there's been no discernable improvement in campus security.
Instead of change, we get warnings. Don't walk alone at night. Don't forget to lock your door. Don't talk to strangers. Don't walk that path. Don't walk in shoes you can't run in. Don't listen to your headphones. Don't walk that path either. No, that one too is a no go. Don't don't don't.
I could wallpaper my bedroom with all the sexual assault bulletin posters I've seen over the years, and only a handful of those men were brought to justice.
Fuck, I don't even have the words.
