whenever I hear...
Nov. 16th, 2011 09:43 am"...it's not a real fandom until there's a bakery/coffee shop AU," I consider punching myself in the face, in hopes of turning back the tsunami of annoyance that instantly washes over me.
So this is a Things That Annoy Me Irrationally post.
- While I've been banging the "JUST READ BETTER COMICS" drum for ages, I still hate that guy. I hate the drum circles of smug indie comics readers, and angry ex-Big Two comics readers, and their "Stop complaining. Start doing. All you have to do is not give Marvel and DC your money," simplicity so much. Fuck off with your kumbaya-easy solutions to a complex problem that you don't understand.
- "Get a job, you hippies." I become a veritable inferno of rage, but am also overtaken by helpless lulz. It's complicated, and strangely physically draining. HIPPIES ARE OVER. OVER, YOU IGNORANT SON OF A NEWT. GET SOME NEW LINES. READ A BOOK. EAT SOME QUINOA. FUCK OFF.
- Slow walkers who are walking slowly solely because they're distracted by their smartphones. Pffftwitch.

OTW thing, you know
Nov. 13th, 2011 04:29 pm1. Good god. I love the organization, but volunteers, you need to take care of yourselves first, before you take care of OTW and AO3. You do not need to go down with this ship. Hell, the ship won't go down if you do take time off. I understand how OMG URGENT things seem on the inside of a big fandom project, and too, just how much whackness you can put up with, if it appears to serve the needs of the community. But the thing is? The community doesn't want you to overwork yourself. The community doesn't want you to get burned out. Don't let anyone, not your organizational supervisor, not fandom friends (and enemies), and not your inner over-worker tell you otherwise. You come first. The needs of the many, are not in any way served by the abuse, neglect, and overwork of the few.
2. The OTW, in effect, claims to represent fandom. Therefore, all of fandom gets to weigh in on the organization's mission, its day to day business, and the upcoming elections. Every AO3 user, writer or reader, has a stake in this (if they want one), whether they have paid for a membership, volunteered for the organization, or just used its services. Ordinary users of the archive are its 'customers'. Non OTW affiliated fans are the very people the organization seeks to represent. Their voices matter a whole hell of a lot.
3. Hey an apology for the redesign issues!
4. Are you reading the FFA threads on the subject? Because you should be. (If you're interested in the OTW elections and the future of the org, that is. The rest of you carry on).
5. Banana.

Aug. 9th, 2011 10:44 amSTOP APPROPRIATING REAL WORLD UNFORTUNATE EVENTS FOR YOUR ~TIMELY FANFIC.
Seriously, now. Just stop doing this most unclassy thing.
I've already seen 20 Dead Seals fic, and London Riot fic. None of it was better than generic SAD THING HAPPENS, A MAN IS CRYING fic. Take a look at your life choices, folks, and treat your fellow humans with dignity and respect.
(All I can say is thank goodness I haven't found the cast of Hawaii Five-0, fighting the good fight in Libya yet, because, my god).

Ok, also from this list of Best Conservative Movies, is this gem about 300:
I want to fucking roll around in the silliness and savour it. THE WEST'S FLEDGLING INSTITUTIONS, YOU GUYS. Did we see the same movie? (I suspect not).
During the Bush years, Hollywood neglected the heroism of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan — but it did release this action film about martial honor, unflinching courage, and the oft-ignored truth that freedom isn’t free. Beneath a layer of egregious non-history — including goblin-like creatures that belong in a fantasy epic — is a stylized story about the ancient battle of Thermopylae and the Spartan defense of the West’s fledgling institutions. It contrasts a small band of Spartans, motivated by their convictions and a commitment to the law, with a Persian horde that is driven forward by whips. In the words recorded by the real-life Herodotus: "Law is their master, which they fear more than your men[, Xerxes,] fear you."

ok seriously fandom
Nov. 16th, 2010 05:50 pmWhat is UP with all post-hipster, glorification of conspicuous consumption in AUs these days? And what is UP with all the bourgeois cultural product placement, disguised as characterization?
I do not think that the cut of a character's suit, or the name of his favourite furniture line is particularly important, unless you make it integral to the story or the character. Details like that add colour and lend versimilitude, but it's incredibly easy to cross the line into vomiting up brand name after brand name in a bland fetishistic orgy. And Gaga help me, if I have to read another smugly insider, impenetrable paen to x person-place-thing, I will... I don't know, be annoyed or something. Ugh.

I filter my posts. I am very upfront about this. If we're new friends, or casual acquaintances, you won't be seeing my personal posts. Virtually all of my flocked content is also filtered in some fashion, but if you think you're missing out on some juicy, fandom gossip? You're not. Ask anyone who's known me a for a few years - flocked content is 99% me whining about my RL problems. Once upon a time all of my content was public, but trolling and speculation on my personal life drove me to lock that stuff down. You are not being excluded/judged/whatever, and if we get close, you'll have the chance to be bombarded by my incessant whining, you lucky dog.
And if you still don't believe me, my primary filters are: personal, whining, trust (people who know my phone number and address), WIP and beta. Seriously. You are not missing out.
Oh, and one last thing, if you'd like to filter me out of certain posts, or from your reading list altogether? Go for it. Your journal, your rules.

In 2008, a San Francisco softball team came to Seattle to compete in the Gay Softball World Series. The team, named D2, made it all the way to the championship game. And that's when people started asking questions. No, literally. In the middle of the game.
Now the players are suing.
...
After losing the game, five players from D2 were brought to a hearing where they were "forced to answer intrusive questions about their sexual orientation and private life in front of a room of over 25 people," including whether they were "predominantly attracted to men" or "predominantly attracted to women."
...
In response to a player's statement that he was attracted to both men and women, a NAGAAA member responded, "This is the Gay World Series, not the Bisexual World Series."

Apr. 11th, 2010 09:48 pmI was looking around for opinions on racism in the Die Hard series (mostly Live Free Or Die Hard and its treatment of Mai), and I stumbled across this comment. I'm posting it here because it's not the first time I've seen the sentiment.
"Sometimes I felt like I was listening to bell hooks. Sometimes anti-racism can get so radical that it in itself becomes racist. See also: DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE."
I... what?
In Die Hard With A Vengeance, Samuel L Jackson plays an electrician and shop owner in Harlem. He does not like the White Man. Take note of the capital letters - he is staunchly opposed to institutionalized white power, get me? He scolds his nephews to stay in school and make something of themselves, saying that no one else, least of all the White Man, is going to help them. He hates drug dealers and thieves. He believes in and tries to do good for his community.
He initially doesn't want to get involved in the crazy bomb-plot-thing that drives the action of the film, saying it's a 'white problem'. But you know, he's saying those words to a white New York City police officer, who he's just met in less than ideal, and highly racially charged circumstances. He's saying them to living, breathing symbol of what he hates. He's saying these things to freaking John McClane, who's a big boy and can certainly take it. There are real reasons for Zeus to feel this way, and to not want to get involved with the police. And hello, power + privilege times eleventy-billion. I mean, my god. Talk about myopia.
Additionally. It's Die Hard. DIE HARD. Aside from some seriously problematic bits in DH4, the series is quite good as action movies go, but it's by no means progressive or rooted in the anti-racist movement. I mean... what the actual fuck? How do you twist things around to argue that DH is racist against white people? *flails*

Women's Studies is still with us
Jan. 28th, 2010 08:33 pmGUYS! I HAVE FOUND THE DUMBEST ARTICLE IN THE HISTORY OF EVER!
HOLY SHIT I CAN'T STOP YELLING!
IT REALLY IS THAT BAD!
HOLY SHIT I CAN'T STOP YELLING!
IT REALLY IS THAT BAD!
The National Post Editorial Board:
The radical feminism behind these courses has done untold damage to families, our court systems, labour laws, constitutional freedoms and even the ordinary relations between men and women.
Women's Studies courses have taught that all women--or nearlyall-- are victims and nearly all men are victimizers. Their professors have argued, with some success, that rights should be granted not to individuals alone, but to whole classes of people, too. This has led to employment equity -- hiring quotas based on one's gender or race rather than on an objective assessment of individual talents.
Executives, judges and university students must now sit through mandatory diversity training. Divorcing men find they lose their homes and access to their children, and must pay much of their income to their former spouses (then pay tax on the income they no longer have) largely because Women's Studies activists convinced politicians that family law was too forgiving of men. So now a man entering court against a woman finds the deck stacked against him, thanks mostly to the radical feminist jurisprudence that found it roots and nurture in Women's Studies.
