*yawn*

I have removed a little over 30 journals from my flist in the last week and I'm still looking to cut more. I'm sure I'll read those journals again at some point, but right now I'm swamped and don't want to feel obliged to keep up with quite so many people. Needless to say, it's becoming much more manageable. Last night [livejournal.com profile] seperis and I were talking about filters and she suggested I set some up to read my flist more easily. I've tried filters more than a few times and I've never been able to make them work to my satisfaction. I find myself reading communities at their sites and never looking at the smaller filters. Eventually I always end up back on the default, unfiltered flist.

I'm really pleased with how [livejournal.com profile] badficsupport and [livejournal.com profile] potterversechat have turned out, but I don't think I've been putting enough work into promoting [livejournal.com profile] the_lioness, or that other community. If you know what I'm talking about, you're a member. If you don't then it doesn't matter. Look to see challenges and membership drives in each of the latter. [livejournal.com profile] tstar78 and I have long be searching for ways to increase the traffic at [livejournal.com profile] the_lioness and we've been playing with the idea of drabble challenges, since they're less of an intellectual investment than full length fics. I really do enjoy talking about Lillian Luthor, so increased traffic would make me very happy. BTW, check out the chat transcript that [livejournal.com profile] adolfa kindly posted in [livejournal.com profile] potterversechat for me. This week's topic was Minerva. Members remember that Minerva is now an open topic for the community.

This weekend I will be writing (and hopefully betaing) intensively, so if there's something you need, ask me today. I have 2 fics due and of course, 1 overdue, as well as that long promised birthday fic for [livejournal.com profile] celli. I'm toying with the idea of a silly Plionel drabble for [livejournal.com profile] thamaris. *g* How can anyone resist silly Petefic? If they can, I don't want to know about it. I think PoTC is going to be rewatched at some point...

I keep meaning to ask. You're talking about your "Iconography fic" - what on earth is that?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I only explained that the once. Iconography was a multi-fandom fic challenge where you tell them two fandoms you'd be willing to write in and they give you an icon. You then write a story of at least 1000 words based on it. I selected Buffy and hmm, I think it was Muppets or something, because I was in the mood for something different. The icon I received was Giles, with the text "Gone are the days of the hero." I've written 3000+ words and I still have several scenes to write. Woe. I've been really nervous about my ability to write Giles, but [livejournal.com profile] faith_accompli, [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock and [livejournal.com profile] tstar78 have been trying to reassure me that Pale Shadow of the Dragon is indeed not of Teh Suck. I'm not entirely convinced, but am almost there. ^_-

Oooh. Sounds fascinating.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Want to audience for me? *wheedles*

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Score! I'll hit you up in AIM sometime this weekend and maybe even spam your inbox. Oh my!

[identity profile] lasultrix.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Note to self: Stop forgetting AIM exists.

Note to others: Everyone should have Y!M to suit me. ;)

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Pfft. It's only you people who have Y!M, the rest of us are on AIM. AIM rocks, Y!M sucks!!!1

Or should that be suX0rs? Hmm.

Actually, I've heard that Y!M is comparably insecure and can act as an easy back door for a hacker.

[identity profile] lasultrix.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Y!M has

(a) Invisibility
(b) The 'write your own status' function
(c) A more minimalist design

On AIM EVERYBODY CAN SEE ME ALL THE TIME JUST LIKE NUDITY WAH!

;)

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no, no. Here's what you do. Put up temporary blocks. S'what I do. You can also 'hide' behind your away message. But I do miss MSN and all the fun little features of it. The big plus about AIM is that the chat rooms are the most consistent of all the messengers. We've found they're least likely to bump people or lag.

[identity profile] lasultrix.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean block everyone temporarily when I want to be invisible? Bit too much work.

And I never was quite sure how to do that away message thing.

Oh! And the other fantastic thing about Y!M is that you can put a name for everybody that'll show up on the list and on message windows. None of this trying to remember "Right, Rube is themalfoycane and Mina is themalfoyfactor" anymore.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I don't know, I block some people for days at a time and most are fine with that. The away message thing isn't too difficult, it's a matter of poking your settings.

That sounds like a nice feature but I try to keep my buddy list down to people I chat with very frequently. Also, I obviously have a better memory than you. :p (Also most people have wildly different names, owing to the larger number of users).

I had Y!M installed only briefly, as I was using it to communicate with Lissane during my T/G days, but in the month (maybe less) that I had it, I was barraged by more idiot plebes than I can count. People kept popping up and asking me to read their fics. *shudder* Of course, then they'd be upset when I finally did so and left a review. *g*

Also? All the cool people are on AIM. Neener.

[identity profile] ex-bellatric192.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I *love* your icon. Seriously!

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, shucks. [livejournal.com profile] faith_accompli made it for me after I said something to that effect during a Slytherclaw (and one Gryffindor) chat. *g*

[identity profile] ex-bellatric192.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehe -- it amuses me greatly. *Is NOT a h/d 'shipper*

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Feh. I'm not a shipper in general. Have you seen this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/blackfall/35111.html) post?

[identity profile] mark356.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel obligated to read every post that appears on your friends list. All it means to add someone to your list is that his or her posts will appear on your friends page; it is not a promise to read his or her every thought. If you're busy, just scroll past posts that aren't interesting to you, don't apply to you, or that you don't have time to read. As for the filters, I can't bring myself to use them because even if I oculd get them to work, I'd still want to at least scroll past every post, and the filters woudl just make that more complicated. Still, I'm glad that you're making LJ more comfortable for yourself!

Yay for MHC fic!

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-08-22 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But I feel obligated to at least stay current. I feel terrible when I talk to someone in chat and have no idea what's going on with them, despite my having their journal of my flist. Easier to just erase that complication - there is no longer an expectation of knowledge. I still skim my list, in that I quickly assess whether the post will be relevant in the future and move on. I really don't give a fuck about people's shoes or nail polish, you know?

Filters drove me crazy in just that way. It's impossible to design perfect filters, I think.

Yay for MHC fic!

Oh, have you read my fics before? I'm really bad about keeping up with people, as you can probably tell from my recent posts. *g*
