So I was looking for a few good threads.

Instead I found these.

*points and laughs*
Oh yes, let's gather all the whining in one central location.
People! Write your own stories. Also? There are no emo-punky girls in HP. Just think about that one.
Get. A. Dictionary.
It's all so obvious.
The fuck? Take a lit theory class, dammit.
Where is OotP indeed!
Oy.

*g* Sometimes, people are just stupid.

[identity profile] eilanhp.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
100 points to Ravenclaw for that.

[identity profile] gryph1.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, my.

[identity profile] oktober-ghost.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Part of me is tempted to ask what is wrong with some people, but then I decide that I really don't care. That's what therapists are for - to be paid enough to care.

You've provided entertainment, and for that, I thank you.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, you should post in all those threads and thank the starters for providing you with entertainment - I just complied them. ;)

[identity profile] oktober-ghost.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I find it much easier to just ignore than to stir shit. If I cared about the topics and/or if I felt someone was just misdirected and that a bit of logic might do them good, I suppose I'd feel differently. As it is, it would seem a huge waste of energy to respond to these threads; nothing would be gained, and I'd wonder why I had wasted my time.

Re:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods*

Which is why I opted to compile them into a post and share the fun, rather than post in them.

[identity profile] eva-c.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was oddly amused by Fin's thread as well...

The great thing about a central whining center is that you can ignore it if you like. I think it's a good idea.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really not so odd.

It's true that I could ignore it, but I'd probably be mentioned in there often enough that I'd have to visit regularly. To clear my name, you see. ;)

[identity profile] cedarlibrarian.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
And you know the mods at FAP are taking them up on that suggestion for a review-related forum, right? ARE THEY COMPLETELY BLIND?? DON'T THEY SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN??

Sorry to yell. I know I'm preaching to the choir here. It's just that...haven't they seen what happens in review threads? Oh, I am just outraged at the stupidity of it all. I think this might deserve a post on S&S, even though I'm tempted to boycott the list because the list owner plugged "Rondo." :)

While I've got your attention...thanks for listening to my TMI the other night. I really appreciate it and think you're terrific. *hugs*

[identity profile] nostrademons.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
As Eva said, it concentrates everything in one place, making things both easier to ignore and easier to keep an eye on. Back when I joined FAP, McG's was absolutely overwhelmed with "Is my character a Mary Sue?" threads. So we created the "In Character" forum. That forum's still overwhelmed with Mary Sue threads, but at least those of us who don't like them don't have to read it anymore. We haven't really had a problem with flamewars in In Character, because those who dislike the folks who create these horrible Mary Sues and then want reassurance that they aren't really all that horrible just don't frequent the forum.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this actually the underlying motivation for creating the forum? The mods just want to shuffle them off into their own corner? ;) You're right that said shuffling has the advantage of keeping the flamewars controlled in In Character, but I'm not sure it would do the same in this case. Whinging about reviews tends to have a more personal and wide-ranging effect, than whinging about Sues, because review-whinge inevitably involves other posters. People tend to show up and defend themselves, (I know I've been guilty of this more than once) and in the process, aggravate a tense situation.

Re:

[identity profile] nostrademons.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what the actual motivation is (I didn't make the decision). But on the thread that suggested it, both "keeping the workshop free of review complaints" and "providing a central location to learn about the art of reviewing" seemed to be common reasons.

It's true that review threads tend to get linked all over the place, and invariably the reviewer ends up hearing about it and they (or more often, their friends) descend upon the thread to defend themself. But personal attacks are against the ToU wherever they are in the Park, and by putting all the "on reviews" threads in one place, it makes it easier for us to police them and make sure they don't get out of hand.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, anytime! I'm happy to listen. *hugs back*

Eva and Nostry have made a good point - it'll be easier to ignore *coughabusecough* them, if they're neatly collected in one place.

And - there will be no boycotting S+S. Post! *cracks whip*

This is why I generally don't bother reading stories at Fiction Alley, nor do I spend much time in the Park (other than looking at a few select threads).

And (betraying my age, here), WTF does "emo-punky" mean?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I'm much the same, though every few months I gather up my hope and go back for One More Try.

Emo-punky is... kind of a... geek-punk-rock thing. I've never been clear on the distinctions. Think... Weezer and the more pretentious new punky bands.

[identity profile] isiscolo.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Think... Weezer and the more pretentious new punky bands.

Aie. I still have no idea what you're talking about! I mean, I was there when punk was, like, new.

Oh, well. This is why I identify with Snape and his cohort. They're my age.

Re:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* Don't worry, I don't know what I'm talking about either. Emo is sort of a... smarter, geekier, more intellectual kind of punk, who listens to softer music that has the punk spirit. I think.

*stares* Have you read Arithmancy and Flowers? (Beware the random pluggery)
ext_1611: Isis statue (Default)

[identity profile] isiscolo.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I did read Arithmancy and Flowers, and really enjoyed it until the last chapter, when I couldn't figure out WTF was going on, and thought it was a really weird place to end.

Then (recently) I discovered it wasn't the end. Duh. WIP.

You've got me actually hoping for Severus to get it on with an original character, which is something that so far only Josan has managed.

Re:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh. Now I have two people on the friend's list who I can pester about 70's popular culture. ;) That chapter would make a rather spectacularly odd place to end - I have about 50 more planned.

Glad you've liked it so far and that you're enjoying the Snape/OC relationship.

Emo-punk:

[identity profile] dphearson.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Think fashionably slouchy, pierced and tatooed young people crying over Weezer, Bright Eyes(?) and Jimmy eat World. the young men look like the bastards of Spock; the young women have lank hair, hunched shoulders and clutch frantically at their mans' arms, saying 'Oh honey, I get you'.
Jesus Christ on the Cross.

Aren't they sad?

Re: Emo-punk:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. *makes shooing motions at emo kids*

Re: Emo-punk:

[identity profile] dphearson.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*bonks one over the head with a Led Zeppelin album*
And I loved Weezer, etc, but certainly not the style.

Re: Emo-punk:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the music is fabulous and I even like the slightly geeky look, but it's the slopiness that gets me, especially in twenty-somethings. I understand young teens not washing their hair - it's a thing. But there's just no excuse when you're 29.

Re: Emo-punk:

[identity profile] dphearson.livejournal.com 2003-04-05 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
*whistles over to Snape*
Um, MHC has something to say to you.
*runs*

Re: Emo-punk:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-05 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes but he pulls it off. Snape doesn't NEED an excuse.

Thank you, Isis

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What does Emo-punky mean? That's one of those phrases that I read, allow my face to go knowledgeably serene (blank), nod and pretend to understand. Meanwhile, my imagination throws up bizzare pictures of what this could possibly be. *Current version: kewpie doll with nose-ring waving its fist...*

~a bemused Icarus, nodding calmly. I'm going to do senility so well.

Re: Thank you, Isis

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem, mostly because I just don't care. See the above post for a really vague definition. ;) Surprisingly, the kewpie doll with nose-ring, waving its fist is... pretty damn accurate. Be sure to give it a pair of geek specs, though.

And yes, you'll be a damn fine senile crank.

Re: points and laughs
I had Finmagik on my ignore list for a while.

Re: Oy.
That thread was first posted in SCUSA. I know because I reported it.

Re:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I can never commit to ignoring a poster because I fear I'll miss out on something interesting or amusing. I suppose there isn't much to miss in a Finmagik post...

SCUSA, you say? How utterly bizarre.

[identity profile] sajasma.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*Snort* This is why I stay far, far away from FAP.

Emo-punky. Why is this a trend? Why?!? I want to bitch slape every emo-punk down. Good lord.

On the Mary Sue: Yes, she is a Mary Sue. First sign? Being "cruelly teased" by her peers. And if she wasn't an MS before, by the advice given in the thread, she very soon will be.

Barf on the Jane Eyre thread. Agreed: WTF?!?!

"Persues Evans"? Persues... *points and laughs* Did you know that when you rearrange Harry Potter, you get: Ytarp Terroh, a terrorist!

Magical terrorism!?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone tell Bush! The real evil is clearly Britain - housing enemies like Ytarp Terroh. *shakes head* Clever of Blair to get in bed with Bush and hide his countries less savory activities under the covers.

[identity profile] runcible.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Mockery at it's finest. You should have gone in there and told them just what you thought... keeping in mind the ToU, however.
I'm going to Friend you because you're just so damn cool... like me! ::Laughs::

[identity profile] til-midnight.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite is when they post to the Student forum asking what Colin's brother's name is or what house is Cho in. I always link them to the lexicon and mention how much better it is to check there before you post at FAP.

Re:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Newbies and morons are endlessly lazy and utterly without shame. It's disgusting. I've never felt comfortable asking stupid questions in a public forum.

[identity profile] til-midnight.livejournal.com 2003-04-05 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. The *only* time I would post a simple question like that is if I've already searched for the answer extensively and still couldn’t find it.

[identity profile] aylapascal.livejournal.com 2003-04-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck is wrong with all these people. Perhaps they are just retarded lazy and can't be bothered to think.

Though I do agree that the Reviewing section would be a good idea. Concentrate the stupidity in one area and give the rest of us space to breathe.

Some people read too much into canon.

Re:

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2003-04-07 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really going to have to go with retarded.

Maybe. You just know I'm going to end up in their though, and my will power just won't keep me out of the kerfluffles.

And hell yeah.
