Smallville has Buffy envy.
Exodus is Smallville's Becoming 2. But really crappy.
Lana declaring her love = Angel regaining his soul and being all puppyish.
Clark putting on the ring and leaving = Buffy stabbing Angel and leaving.
Chloe shedding her ethics and throwing in with Lionel = Xander neglecting to tell Buffy about Angel's soul.
Jonathan telling Clark that he is indeed a moron = Joyce laying the smackdown on Buffy.
Helen (maybe) betraying Lex = wacky reversal of the Spike/Dru 'napping.
Lex crashing into the ocean = Spike leaving Sunnydale, but with the payoff coming much quicker.
It's all there folks. The Smallville writers wished they worked on a show that didn't suck. A show called Buffy, RIP. Clark, like Buffy doesn't realize that he's far too stupid to handle the wackiness that life is, without his friends, so he does incredibly stupid things, like blow up a spaceship in his storm cellar. And run off when the going gets tough. The difference is that Buffy never snorted coke, stole her mother's motorcycle and rode off to conquer the world. Clark and Buffy share that fantastic combination of superiority and guilt complexes, but Clark, much to just about everyone's chagrin, also has a stupid complex. Buffy at her most stupid never came close to the wonder that is Clark Kent.
Also, I hereby declare that if Lana's love reaches red!Clark, I will give up Smallville forever and write news anchorslash. That is all.

However, you must remember (regarding that last statement) that in an AU episode of Lois and Clark, Clark was enganged to be married to Lana ;-)
