Re the saga of alecto and Joss the rapist...

[livejournal.com profile] suitablyemoname says:

"You know what? It's just occurred to me: because the patriarchy has historically reinforced a dependence between the penis and its owner, every time a man exploits this dependence by masturbating, he is, in fact, raping his penis, as the penis has been conditioned by society and its personal experiences to accede to the needs of its owner.

Men who take their penises out to dinner beforehand to talk about its feelings are simply attempting to assuage their evident guilt over this horrendous act."

*dead*

That is made of win. I'm always astonished to discover that Andrea Dworkin style radical feminism still exists (and didn't, you know, die out alongside other unfortunate things from the same era, like shag carpets), and this was a particularly painful example, because it was batshit crazy + bad scholarly writing, and crazy + stupid is always more head-desk worthy then crazy people who can at least cite sources properly.

I had an interesting conversation with my Women's Studies prof today. He's says that increasingly, the international conferences are being inundated with 70's style, radical feminists. From Australia. Apparently it's the Next Big Thing of Australian feminism.

Yeah, on one of the things in the responses that made me happy, was all the people asking to see her credentials. Like, "Are you sure you're academically trained...?" ;)

Huh. Given the extent to which things have improved since the 70s, you'd think people would have adopted that brand of feminism then, not waited until now. From what I understand, feminist theory and gender theory have gotten more sophisticated since then -- maybe a shift to that sort of old school black&white, women are good and men are evil mentality is a reversion to something simpler?

I don't know - the way he put it, it was as if radical feminism was just hitting Australia now. Like they missed it the first time round.

a reversion to something simpler

I could see that. Third wave feminism and trans activism can seem pretty threatening, so it's only natural that scared people would glom onto a simpler model.

AHhaha! I read a Yaoi Manga once where there was an accident on a school bus and a couple of guys wound up... possessing other guys' penises!

Oh, the hijinks that ensued. *wipes a tear from her eye*

Mentioned because the very situation you described would have been VERY PLAUSIBLE!

Why won't someone stand up for the penises?

Ah ha ha! Oh yaoi writers, those scamps.
