Question for SPN fans

I know there are a few of you on the flist. Can someone point me to meta, if there is any, about Uriel? I'd like to know what the fandom thinks about:

1. His distaste for humanity. Especially the 'mud monkey' thing.

2. The decision to cast a pretty white man as the 'guardian angel', and a black man as the 'heavy' angel. Does the fandom think this is significant?

3. His future on the show.

I have seen both points one and two discussed a lot in general episode reactions, but have not read meta posts specifically about that. (However, I don't really search out meta aside from ep reactions, so it may well exist. I just have no idea where to even look.)

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I really have no idea where to start in looking for SPN meta. -_-

What have you seen regarding 1 and 2?

I don't have links to anything, unfortunately, and I don't even remember who brought up those points or not. D: It's been a while since he first appeared and I don't bookmark ep reviews or anything.

I went through my own SPN posts (http://kyuuketsukirui.livejournal.com/tag/tv:supernatural) and found this one (http://kyuuketsukirui.livejournal.com/953630.html), which I think is the first ep with Uriel, though all I said was "Wow, this episode had a lot of failsauce going on. I just...can they have a black character on there without fucking it up? Is it impossible? How hard could it really be!?" Way to be vague, me!

But from what I remember, I definitely saw a lot of people talking about the "mud monkey" stuff and how it was problematic to have a black character both use terms like that and be the one who was "racist" against humans. I also saw people talk about how it was problematic that Uriel was the muscle, the violent, angry one, while Castiel was the emo one who is becoming more human. (Those were my own thoughts as well, but I know I saw lots of other people talking about them. Does the SPN newsletter link to episode reviews? If you can find the issue after the episode where Uriel first appeared, that would probably be a good place to start.)

Four years in I'm just discovering this show. At first I was too busy for a new show. Then the Wincest. So, so very not my thing. At any rate, yeah, newsletters are probably a good idea. I'll have to go find them. -_-

I 'discovered' SPN and the angels through YouTube. At fist I was all, gaga over Castiel, but when Uriel showed up I literally facepalmed.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, the meta I have links for don't seem to cover much of season four yet:

http://community.livejournal.com/spn_heavymeta/

http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Meta_in_Supernatural

Ha! When I googled "spn uriel meta" this post turned up on the first page. It doesn't look good for Uriel meta.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, now that's just sad. Poor Uriel. D:

I didn't know you were into SPN! And thanks for the links.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
This (http://missyjack.livejournal.com/368771.html) piece answered some questions I had about Wincest in fandom. It's... kind of what I expected. :(

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, SPN has hollowed out my skull and is curled up inside. In January I watched the first three seasons and caught up on the fourth. XD

I just don't post fanfiction in my main journal. =p

I've just recently started getting to the meta side of things.

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've only just 'discovered' the show. I'm going to mainline it when I get a chance. Who's your favourite character? Do you ship anyone? *bombards you with questions*

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hands down, Bobby is my favourite character. XD

Between the boys, Dean used to be my favourite because I identify very strongly with him; I was the elder sibling left to care for a little brother a lot of the time. But as the seasons progressed I found Sam grew more interesting to me because Dean's pov becomes more the viewer's pov.

Then I started writing fanfiction and I found myself sliding into Sam's head easier than Dean's.

I don't really ship anyone, I just look for well-written fic! Wincest isn't much of my thing but there are certain fics that work for me. Usually involving one or the other being possessed. =p

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of the awesome of Bobby, but haven't encountered him yet. I reeeeally have to mainline the eps. Wow. I'm all excited. I've also heard that Ruby's a lot of fun? I'll have to beg for some recs when I'm done.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom has mixed reviews of Ruby but I quite like her character! I'll round up some recs for you! Muahhahhaha...
I also highly recc mainlining the eps. It was amazing watching them all together. I was able to make more connections between episodes.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, also, I'll be interested to hear what you have to say about it! The first half of season one is a lot of urban myths before they really get rolling on the main plot.

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly I can't help with your meta search but I'm sure spnnewsletter has some. It's just...somewhere around post 900 or something.:)

2. Fandom is pretty much all 'Castiel is *pretty* and now I can finally ship a non-incesty pairing and let go of my shame!1!!'.
:)

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Castiel is darn pretty, and I'm not gonna lie, I'm already on the Dean/Castiel boat. It's just not the only boat I... er... sail on.

Sam/Ruby=hot y/y?

Also, it's the big picture stuff that's finally gotten me interested in the show.

Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's 'cause there's so much to ship in SPN! (Especially when you consider that it's a show with only two characters on the screen full time.)

Yes, I'm one of those shameful wincest people. Not faithfully tho.

Sam/Ruby=hot y/y?
Yes and no. My favorite Ruby is blond and not into Sam as a sexual being. However, I have to give a shout out to the one who climbed on Sam and rode that pony all the way home.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Save a horse ride a cowboy Sam.

I... don't have anything against Wincest of a moral or ethical nature. I mean, I don't think there's something wrong with liking Wincest. I'm just really not into incest stories, and especially not into handwaved incest stories, where the incest isn't even important to the story being told. Or to put it differently, I don't find incest romantic or hot - it's not a kink for me - and I'm not even interested in seeing sibling relationships reconstituted as something else. I'm pretty invested in brotherhood and sisterhood. More so than I am in porn. *g*

Holy shit that was long, and I haven't even gotten into the show yet. ;)

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-11 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Climb every mountain...and Sam.:)

I'm just really not into incest stories, and especially not into handwaved incest stories, where the incest isn't even important to the story being told.

I hate to say it but that's actually a blessing in disguise. If most of the wincest was nicely written and well thought out, I wouldn't have time to read all that other stuff. :)
(Also, my kink is certain type of dark fic. Wincest applies but only if done 'properly'.)

More so than I am in porn. *g*

Heh. That comment gets a whole new level when I just read your latest Cap/Tony. (It was *scrumptious*.:)

What season (episode) are you on Supernatural?

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just watching stuff randomly right now. When I get a bit of a break in school, I'll start from the beginning and spree through. I'll keep everyone updated. ;)

What kind of darkfic are you into?

It was *scrumptious*.

Thank you!

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-12 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, you're watching things *randomly*!!
I don't even go to a movie if the trailers have started.
:)

I probably shouldn't have said darkfic but it's the closest description to what I like. I like my fic a little (a lot, really) mean, sometimes. Not torture porn or anything, just, you know, when one writes about zombies, I fully expect bad things to happen. If it's wincest, it can't be all fluffy bunnies and John giving Dean away at the wedding.
I don't like molly codling and I don't like it when good, meaty subjects are wasted on sugary, occ crap.

Boy, I hope that makes sense.:D

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm flexible. *g*

That does make sense. The fandom terms are pretty limited. Angst, for example, is all but useless. I get what you're saying, though.

I guess I don't like incest fics because I hail from a close-knit family, and my brother and I basically have our own language. I know what that kind of relationship is like, where the family becomes the whole world for you, and... yeah.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what that kind of relationship is like, where the family becomes the whole world for you, and... yeah.

I hear that a lot. You can probably tell that I'm an only child raised on Grimm's fairy tales and comic books.:D

You're in luck, there are quite a few really fantastic SPN gen stories.
:)

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I <3 gen. Once I'm a little more versed in the show and fandom, I'm going to ask for recs.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, there are so many *lists*, thematic and best ofs and crossovers and and and..! You are lucky to have waited almost four years, now all you have to do is search, like, five minutes and presto! (or ask your flist, whatever.:)

Ps. I have friends who don't read anything else but slash. :0!1!!

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, so do I. And hey, whatever you're in fandom for, right? But I think they're missing out on so much. In HP for example, there's some absolutely incredible gen and het. The same is true for most big fandoms that have a... big (in scope) source text, with a big cast.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And hey, whatever you're in fandom for, right?

You're so much better person than I am.:)
...ok, you're right, to each their own and all that. It still grates me when people go 'Oh, there's nothing good to read! Woe is me! World is cruel and unfair!' when there is so much good stuff to read if you stop reading the same thing over and over again and go beyond 'easy reading'.

I'm pmsing, can you tell?:)

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I couldn't tell at all. *g*

I think OTPers are the worst for that, but then, they have such a narrow interest that it's a little absurd to whine about their not being enough fic. If you're only interested in two characters, in a particular configuration, you're going to have to accept that not everyone's going to write that, all the time.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I'm in that stage where I can tell I'm getting more bitchy but can't do anything about it. Woe is me, world is cruel and unfair? :)

If you're only interested in two characters, in a particular configuration, you're going to have to accept that not everyone's going to write that, all the time.

I remember this (now) amusing thing on Criminal Minds slash (only fic, only slash) community. A clearly young-ish reader was all 'I don't like the majority of the fic here, it's all about this one character and I don't like him so people should, like, not write it.'.
At the time I was beyond pissed off but now it's beyond hilarious how someone could be that entitled.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's cool to rant about your dislike of a character in your own journal, and wish that people weren't writing about him. Fine, whatever. But it's not really comm-appropriate, unless you turn it into some more generally interesting meta.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] dlasta.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, it's *your* journals. Just slap some lj-cuts in appropriate places and Bob's your uncle. If you're lucky somebody on your flist can put a few well constructed sentences together to prove you wrong. Or right.

Re: Hello sailor?

[identity profile] schmevil.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. I don't get the impulse to throw it in other people's faces, unless you're deliberately trolling. Which these people usually aren't - they tend to be surprised at how pissed off people get.
