Very late Yuletide letter

Y: The Last Man

I was on a years long break from comics, when I read a review of this and several other comic books For Grown Ups. Y: the Last Man (and Preacher) are entirely responsible for my getting back into comics, and now I mod a comics community, a comics-fanworks recing community, and I'm trying to write my own! I love comics, and I've loved them since I was a kid, but for a while there I was burned out. Y: the Last Man both reminded me of all the things I adored about funny books, and reminded me of their great potential - to be moving, ambitious, hilarious, tragic.

For this fandom I requested:

Agent 355, Dr Allison Mann, Rose Copen, Yorick Brown
High stakes poker.

The above four characters are sort of an OT4 for me. More in the sense of their being such an effective, and emotionally balanced team, than anything else. I fell in love with the original trio of 355, Allison and Yorick, right from the start, but when Rose joined them the dynamic changed. We saw new layers to Allison. Yorick and 355 spent even more time together, all the while denying that there was, or could ever be, anything between them. Also, come on. Eye-patch wearing, lesbian pirate and spy? What more could you ask for?

The fandom being what it is, I'm open to just about anything. I like funny Y stories, sad Y stories, gen, femslash, het and slash Y stories.

C J Cherryh - Fortress series

Cherryh is one of my favourite SF/F writers, and Fortress is, I think, one of her tighter universes. Fortress is what happens when you apply SF style world building to a fantasy series: you get intimate details of political alliances, the economics of trade, warfare and the supernatural. Because it's Cherryh, there's layer after layer of character development, personal conflicts, cultural mixups, and so very much detail. She's created a system of the supernatural, differentiating between magic, wizardry and sorcery, laying out the possibilities and practices of each, but managed to retain a sense of the numinous. Not to mention, the characters. <3

For this fandom I requested:

Barrakketh, Tristen
Tristen encounters someone he knew as Barraketh.

I love Tristen. He's an adorable, world-shaking, god in the flesh, and my favourite thing about him is that he saw his dark side, accepted its existence, and chose not to be Barraketh. There are so many great moments in the book addressing the thin line between these two beings - is it just a matter of time and space? - and the tension that Tristen's history, not to mention his very existence, creates. I'd love to see Tristen have to deal with a ghost, reborn Sihhe, or wizard, who knew (or knew of) Barraketh. How would he deal with a reminder of his other self in his daily life?

Caroline Stevermer - College of Magics series

Ok, Faris Nallaneen? Wins at life as far as I'm concerned. As does Stevermer, who built such a lovely fantasy world in this series. Intrigue on trains! Magical hats! Highway men! Rides in early limos! Shopping in Paris! It's all so much fun, made even more fun by how badly it chafes Faris. A College of Magic is a great coming of age tale, with political finagling, and and understated love story thrown in as bonuses. It's filled to the brim with deep and abiding friendships, complicated family dynamics, and conflicting loyalties. And it's funny.

For this fandom I requested:

Agnes Paganell, Brinker Nallaneen, Faris Nallaneen, Tyrian
Since his daughter died, the king is a changed man. Life in the court after the events of College of Magics.

College of Magics had such a bittersweet ending, with our protagonists making it out ok, but stuck in positions that they would never have chosen for themselves. Tyrian a king? Faris the warden of the north? I think not. Add to that Agnes' losses, and Brinker's coming around to seeing the bigger picture, and we've got the makings of a million fascinating stories. I'd love something set in Tyrian's court: how's he doing as king? How are the Nallaneens handling this very changed world? How is Faris? Funny, serious and everything in between - I'll just be overjoyed to revisit these characters.

True Blood

I was not blown away by the first episode, but by the third, I was hooked. I have so much love for this show and all its insanity, sexiness, twists, turns and over-heated drama. What I like best about True Blood, is how it balances the relentless advance of the (insane) plot, with screwball hilarity, and small moments of humanity. It's like every once in a while the show takes a breath, gets serious, and real, and sometimes devastating, and then before you've had time to process it, it's back to strippers, cultists, and psychic waitresses playing super hero.

For this fandom I requested:

Lafayette Reynolds, Sam Merlotte, Sookie Stackhouse, Tara Thornton
Typical day at Merlotte's.

Merlotte's has become the heart of the town, and I think, of the show. I'd really love gen story (though shippy is also cool!) following the staff through a typical day at the bar. One of my favourite things about the dynamic between these four characters, is that despite himself, Sam has managed to assemble a misfit family. Merlotte's gets, and employs, all kinds so either a serious or a funny story would be great. And no lie, I will love you forever if you attempt Lafayette's and Tara's deliciously snappy dialog.
