On the remix

Remixes are always fascinating, especially when the writers choose older stories, whose impact in fandom has been widespread. Imagine if those earily Draco/Hermione stories, for example, had happened this way and not that way. How would our perceptions of the ship and shippers be different? How would the body of D/Hr fic be different?
If fic is discussion, then remixes are rebuttals and refinements. No, it should have happened this way. Well, sure, but you forgot this part. Or - I agree, but I really wish it could have happened this way instead.
One can't change the essence of the story, but one can alter the flavour. Vic's example of The Little Mermaid is an interesting one. A Remix is fanfiction three times over, playing of canon, the original fic and fandom narrative. A Remix does to the original fic exactly what the fic did to canon.
Also, it looks like fun and you should all, like, join and pimp.
