Banlieue 13: Ultimatum

What's that? A sequel to the bestest free-running-cops-and-robbers-action-movie evar? Ok, the only free-running-cops-and-robbers-action-movie (that I know of), but the point stands. A sequel to Banlieue 13 coming out in February? The gods have been kind.

Next up, a new, and hopefully regular feature here at schmevil, Marry F*ck, or Kill. A quick rundown for the unfamiliar: Marry, F*ck, or Kill is a game, usually involving large consumptions of sugary substances (when teenlets are playing), or alcohol (if aged degenerates are playing). Three characters, people, animals, vegetables or minerals are given, and you must choose one to marry, one to f*ck and one to kill. No fence sitting. No halfsies. Ya gotta choose. So for our inaugural game:

Wicked ponytail action there! *tries to brush up on her French* I STILL have to fight the preconceived notion that French movies are surreal and end with bleak despair.

Ha! I have the same problem with French movies. It doesn't help that the French movies that do make it onto IFC or whatever, usually ARE surreal and end with bleak despair.

Hermione would probably be a great wife but I picked Ron. I don't know, I think we'd be weirdly compatible. Under all the goofballery, he's clever, loyal and passionate. A much better match for me than know-it-all Hermione. Especially since I'm a know-it-all.

Hmmm. I haven't had the same experience with French films. The problem is that not enough are released in the US and seem to be unavailable anywhere.

There are more French films released in Canada, for obvious reasons, but quite often, the ones that get the most publicity are the existential films. Don't get me wrong, I love art house cinema, experimental cinema, but sometimes you just want a solid, entertaining story. I think there's still some shock that European movies aren't all strange comedies and arty tragedies. It's hard to shake that kind of rep.

Just re-watched Banlieue 13 (to better enjoy the Yuletide) and had no idea there'd be a sequel. Looks like they've left out the sister?
...Not that I care, really, I just enjoy my continuity. :)

Yeah, I was sad to see no Lola. Amazingly in the new Fast and the Furious movie, they kept the female characters and actually seem to have given them bigger roles. o.O An manly man's action movie that's not treating the ladies as disposable? Wha?

Since Lola was the one thing that made me go wtf? in the B13, I'm not all that sad about her absence. :)

Lola was... very wasted in B13. They could have done something er, classier with the character. Her insta-downward spiral was kind of nasty. Still, I'm always happy to see female characters NOT cashed in for the younger/hotter model.

Mostly I hated Lola's 'instant' recovery. It literally came out of nowhere. I'm still unclear if they were trying to tell us that she wasn't abused sexually while captive (come on now) or...whatever, something, I dunno. It was just weird.

Still, I think the uber!gay will still be there, even if Letty and Mia get to be real characters. I mean, dude, TFaTF is just SO GAY.

I hope they don't overboard with the Mia&forgiveness thing and let the gay happen. I know that there's always fanfic (slash, really) and everything but still.

Balnieue 13 is good. If you like fight movies, that is. It showcases free running, which always cool, and it's got more punches than plot points, but it's fun. It even manages to sneak in a little social commentary.
