Sep. 20th, 2003 01:16 pmThe community blurb, for the rest of you, reads:
Frank Davey said it of CanLit and Tolkien said it of medieval literature: critics and writers fear that the work cannot stand up to serious analysis and so retreat into categorization, thematic criticism and bland admiration. In these marginalized literary communities, there is a sense that 'real writing' and 'real art' is taking place somewhere else.
Fanfiction is a distinct literature and it both deserves and needs to be taken more seriously and examined in greater depth. We do not suggest that fanfic shouldn't be fun, or taken lightly, after all, professional writers take their talents lightly at times and most enjoy writing. We only want to elevate criticism of fic beyond discussion of ships or categorization.
This community does not exist to prove that fic is as good as 'real writing'. We're interested in literary and academic analysis of the derivative fiction, which the Harry Potter books have produced, not in discussing that process. We think that having this discussion should make the value of fanfic evident.
We're looking for:
Historical criticism.
Analytical criticism.
Genre criticism.
Archetypal criticism.
Phenomenological criticism.
Essentially, this community exists to discuss fanfic in its literary context.
If you don't have the tools to participate in a literary or academic discussion, then this community probably isn't for you. I don't say this out of some deep well of elitism, but only to warn you that
