Business Or Pleasure
Harry Potter, het, ~2500 words

Business or Pleasure isn't the kind of story that has a built in audience, and I couldn't figure out where to advertise it. Does anyone know where I can post a No-Name-Ravenclaw/Cho Chang noirish short? I mean, really.

How do you feel about poetry? Because your Help Haiti thing wants to be a Lily/Snape poem.

Yes, you heard that right. A Lily/Snape poem. Fuck my life. :D

Meanwhile, I've got a third one started, and am plugging away at my SPN femslash exchange story.

Whenever I sit down to write these things, I get interrupted by work. Grr, life. Anyway! I offered ficlets of ~500 words, but the first one ran a leeetle bit long. I'm now hard at work on the second one. Hopefully it won't be quite so, er, over budget.

So I thought I'd submit my recent stories to the Bechdel Test. I excluded single-character stories and drabbles, because the test requires there being more than one character. :p For what it's worth, there seem to be about equal numbers of dude drabbles and girl drabbles.

The Bechdel Test:

1. Has two women in it who

2. Talk to each other

3. About something other than a man

The result? 4/10 stories passed the Bechdel Test. Ouch! I need to stop writing all male casts. This was actually worse than I expected.

The bulk of the fails come from Supernatural fandom, where I've been writing a lot of Sam&Dean&Castiel - I've got some work to do in this area. I have a few longer stories in progress, so I'll treat them as an opportunity to feature more of SPN's fantastic female characters. I've also got some femslash (various fandoms) in the works.

If I test everything in my archive it gets a bit weird. On the whole, my HP stories pass, because I wrote a long story with plenty of female characters, het, and lots of shorter stories with female pov characters. Smallville is close to a complete fail, for two reasons: 1) I was writing Clark/Lex; 2) I was writing a lot of character studies with one or two characters. Avengers is a mixed bag. There's lots of Steve/Tony but there's also some gen stuff in there.

Overall, a big problem seems to be small cast stories. I'm not sure how to test those - is there a related test that might be applicable?

My Help_Haiti ficlets are first on the list. They keep getting interrupted by work. Grr.

Y: The Last Man, Yorick/355 (If they got together fantasy).
Harry Potter, Snape (I might do Snape in Gotham for this).
Avengers, Steve/Tony (Tony takes Steve to a farm. There's a pony).
Avengers, Jan/Hank, Wanda/Simon (Possssibly a double date. Or an evil quiz show. Maybe both).

Then there are my holiday stories. One of which needs a scene and some editing. The other still needs to be written.

Avengers, Steve/Tony (Stephanie Rogers is pulled out of the ice and has to adjust to the brave new world. This is like... more complicated than it sounds because I have to remake the MU to adjust for a female Captain America in WW2. Think about it).

Kill Bill, Beatrix, BB/Nicki Green (Nicki goes looking for revenge. I think I'm going to do this in the style of the movie, with pics, footnotes, asides and musical interludes).

And my other stuff. There's lots of it. I'm going to give you the ones that are at the top of my priority list.

Avengers, Clint/Bobbi, Steve/Tony, Rhodey (Clint finds out that Steve and Tony are maybe-dating. First he freaks out, then he tries to enlist Rhodey to help things along). For Scotty.

Supernatural, Dean, Sam, Bobby and Castiel (During the final battle Castiel died. Now he's back as a human. Bobby adopts him, havoc ensues).

Supernatural, Castiel and Dean (Castiel is a fallen angel guarding the city of Dis. He pulls Dean out of hell, but not for altruistic reasons).

Supernatural, my SPN Femslash assignment, the details of which I can't reveal.

Harry Potter, Lily/James, baby Harry (The Potters face isolation, cabin fever, and a baby, in the house in Godric's Hollow).

I'm not actually sick, but apparently work prefers that I stay home, rather than spread my hypothetical germs. I have no problem with this, because I've been catching up on some much needed sleep. Well, maybe I'm a little sick, because sleeping all night and half the day, every day for a week? Is obviously not of the normal. Anyway. Home tired, if you will.

Which has given me some time to fiddle, and wonder, and plan. One of my primary mental defaults, when I'm home sick/tired/whatever, is fic.

So SPN people, weigh in, should I write the story of college-age Sam Winchester taking a series of part time jobs? It would go like this:

One day, in all his Winchesterian wisdom, Sam decided to get a part time job. Maybe it was a way to feel normal, after an adolescence spent hustling pool and cards. Maybe it was a way to ensure a constant source of beer money. Maybe he did it because all the (not so) cool kids (of which he was one) were doing it. Sam no longer remembered.

Instead, after six months of toiling in retail, food service and shady bars, all he could hold on to was the vague inkling that somewhere, there was light at the end of this tunnel; that someday, he would be free from uniforms, the smell of old grease, and midnight shifts. That in some other life, he hadn't been contractually obliged to accept the abusive whims of customers, clients, and jerks of all shapes and sizes.

He held onto that inkling like it was his very life blood; through being drenched in soda; through being called a 'maniacal yeti $*&%'; through being kicked in the shins by uncountable children; through being pawed by drunk soccer moms; and even through being pawed by drunk soccer dads, too many of whom looked like his actual father figures (namely his dad, and Bobby).

He held onto that inkling so that one day, he could stoke its tiny spark into a blaze of righteous fury; so he could stand up and declare, "I quit! I *$&@ing quit!"

Unfortunately for Robin Brady, today was that day.

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canuckians!

On this day of thanks (ok, last night through to this morning), I wrote a story about a demon. LOLWUT SELF? I've been working on an overdue story, and it's driving me nuts. I thought, ok, I'll just fiddle with something else. Write some drabbles, take my mind off it, and then I'll finally be able to finish the damn thing. Then this fell out.

Title: Invictus
Summary: That wasn't the lie; she remembered being human. In better detail than she liked, really. The lie was everything else.
Characters: Sam/Ruby, Azazel, Dean
Word Count: 3328
Warnings: ADULT for violence and implied sex. Also, there's Sam, through Ruby's eyes. Be warned. :/
Spoilers: All of S4

Don't let that Sam/Ruby tag fool you, this isn't a romance, and this isn't a particularly sympathetic Ruby. It's a really nasty Ruby, and one I think that I'll return to. Now that I've done demon!Ruby, and sketched out the beginnings of a back story, I think I have to write that story - how she got that way.

Let me tell you some things I've decided about Ruby.

She lived through the Black Death, not the Great Plague of London (which was the last time that the "plague was big," as she put it, iirc), and she is from Italy.

She was very influenced by the stirrings of the Renaissance around her: she was educated, and she studied alchemy, necromancy, and ancient religious texts, in addition to local witchcraft. She might have been a scientist, had she been born a man.

She was one of the most powerful witches of her time. She was also, as her time ran out, increasingly desperate to find ways to kill demons. This meant dipping into darker and darker magic.

Have been playing Beatles Rock Band for the last gajillion hours. I am drum fail incarnate! But when it comes to vocals, I kick ass (for the lord)! For some reason, I'm giving serious thought to writing filk of Fergie.

I know, I owe you a playlist, a poll, and many, many replies. Consider them tbc. Probably after sleep. In the meantime, chew on a meme.

Ask me any question about any of my stories/'verses/Au's, whether past or future or unwritten scenes and I will answer. This even includes the future of some verses that may potentially be spoilery. If you're really nice, I'll give you a snippet.

I'm looking for a good place to post/archive my Buffy fic. I've actually managed to accumulate a whole three stories! This latest makes it three:

Imbrication
S8 | Giles | Word Count - 6660
"We had this vital, and glorious duty: to train the Slayer, and guide her in her mission. But who were we?"

I seem to be ass-backwards in my fannishness. Lately I've been writing in established fandoms like Buffy and Harry Potter, and not giving my attention to shiny new fandoms. As crazy as I am about Mad Men and True Blood, I have no desire to write for them. So far. Huh.

Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what. I will answer them all in a new post.

Also, I wrote a story. I can't believe I wrote nearly 13,000 words of Ron/Hermione rom-com. O.o But schmevil being schmevil, said rom-com also has vampires, werewolves, dates from hell, bad babysitters and assorted tomfoolery. It's been a looong while since I wrote from Ron's pov, and I'd forgotten how fun it is - Ron really is kind of a jerk, even as he's also a decent, ordinary guy. For me at least, it's wicked fun to write about characters who are flawed in everyday ways. You can have them do all the idiot things that you and your friends get up to, even as they Fight For Great Justice.

BtVS/AtS (S8/AtF) | 9,978 | Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike, Giles, Dawn
Five people Buffy loved.
Remix of Five Loves, by [livejournal.com profile] confusedkayt. [livejournal.com profile] outlawpoet beta'd.

Those five people she loved being Angel, Spike, Hank Summers, Giles and Dawn. Kayt's story is five linked true drabbles about Buffy, and how she loves. Mine is 20 times longer (eep!) but still a character study about Buffy, and how she loves. I originally considered writing about five different characters who Buffy loved. Instead I kept the characters and looked at their relationships from a different angle.

As I said on Scans Daily:
Last night [livejournal.com profile] kijikun informed me that David Petersen is at SDCC. I need to start going to cons. D: Petersen is the genius responsible for Mouse Guard. As some of you might remember, I'm freaking crazy about this series. Kij was kind enough to offer to send me a sketchbook and some pins. *twirl* For those of you out of the know, the official site actually has a good introduction to the series, including character profiles and original pages for sale.

Go here for two pages of mice tradesmen and one of interior art.

My much delayed book club post on Wonder Woman: the Hiketeia is up. It ran longer than I thought it would. Still, I hope we get some good responses, because I want to tear apart the Batman and Wonder Woman characterizations in the book, which I find fascinating. I'm really partial to Wondy stories that borrow heavily from Greek literature, which is why I like my Perez, Rucka and Simone Wondys so much. Ruck and Simone (more than Perez imho) are both interested in a Diana who lives in the modern world, but has strong, strong ties to the ancient world. Wondy needs that as a character. Anyway, check out book club for more on Hiketeia, which is a great Wondy story.

For those comics fans who aren't following the book club, our schedule for the fall is... interesting.

August: Justice League International Vol 1
September: JLA: Tower of Babel
October: Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall
November: Pride of Baghdad

Some books are super-conventional, others not so much. It'll be fun, no doubt. As I've never read JLI and only skimmed Tower of Babel, my posts on the first two will be ~fresh~ and hopefully unprejudiced. ;)

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] mctabby is once again hosting the Cat's Birthday Drabblethon. Prompt submissions are now open. It's one drabble based on a randomly assigned prompt, over the course of the weekend. Not exactly onerous, and wholly hilarious.

Also, there was fic for me this week.

Intimate was written for me as part of this year's Weasley Fest.
Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny
This moment with Hermione felt more intimate than any moment before in his life.

A Sympathetic Ear (Last Assignment Remix) is a remix of my Someday They Will Be Scarce.
